BRETT: It’s amazing, waking up in the morning and being able to see. You know, going to a pool and not have, you know, I mean, and not have to worry about, you know, I can dive in the water, you know, open water--I can see stuff under water. It’s a completely different atmosphere.
KENNETH MISELIS, MD: Wavefront Lasik--and the particular laser we have is called custom cornea--has to do with addressing some of the aberrations in the visual system that we don’t treat with standard Lasik. Standard Lasik takes everyone with the same prescription numbers and treats them identically. Well, it turns out that somebody with this prescription and somebody else with the same prescription don’t have the same eyes. And so treating this one the same as this person can result in some inconsistencies in the results. And so by treating some of the other aberrations in the visual system that distinguish this person’s prescription from that person’s prescription, we can make a more accurate result for the individual.
And the way we do that is to measure the incoming light of the eye and how it reflects back out of the eye to determine the individual fingerprint, if you will, of that person’s particular prescription. Program that fingerprint into the laser and then make sure we orient that fingerprint in the appropriate way with iris registration to give that particular person their individual personal fingerprint visual correction.
And the advantage of all of that is that it improves the results for that particular individual. It really customizes their results for their particular eye, and we can achieve much more satisfactory results with Wavefront Lasik with a custom cornea than we can with a standard Lasik.
