SHELLEY RICHARDS, OD: Seniors should definitely come in once a year for a routine eye exam, make sure they have their eyes dilated. Be aware of their family history and make sure if they have any conditions, macular degeneration, you know, trying to follow the guidelines of help to minimize their risks. Diabetes is obviously more common, glaucoma’s more common as we get older. So just making sure that they come in for annual eye exams so we can definitely check the health of the eye.
KENNETH MISELIS, MD: Routine eye care is extremely important because we can recognize diseases at their earliest stages. Glaucoma is silent. You can’t tell it’s a problem until it’s too late. Macular degeneration may be stabilized or maybe even improved if we catch it early, but if the damage is already extensive, there’s not anything that anyone can do. And cataracts are one of those things that we can help to plan patients’ lives so that they can perhaps understand the process of cataract formation so that they can plan when they’re going to need to have surgical intervention for that.
