KENNETH MISELIS, MD: Cataracts are treated with cataract surgery, removal of the cataract. We remove the cloudy lens and replace the cloudy lens with an implant or intraocular lens. Our standard cataract procedure has involved what’s called a monofocal lens. A monofocal means one focus, and that usually is for distance. But the ability to read is now dependent on glasses, or to use the computer is dependent on glasses. One can’t do both.

Custom cataract procedures are to try to take the new technology and lenses, multifocal lenses, accommodative lenses, or even mono vision, monofocal lenses set for different distances, and try and tailor the procedure to the particular needs of the individual patient. So we can maximizes their vision to fit their lifestyle in a comfortable way that works best for them. We have a lot of options available, and it really is a standard kind of part of our normal cataract treatment program to go over all of these choices with patients to find out what they want and what they need and to make a recommendation that fits their lifestyle.
